Program Director Welcome Letter
Welcome to the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Oklahoma State University Medical
Center (OSUMC). Our goal is to train physicians to be highly competent and compassionate clinical
cardiologists. Our three year program is accredited by the ACGME, and has osteopathic
recognition.
Our curriculum is designed to meet the ACGME and ABIM requirements for certification in cardiovascular medicine. Clinical rotations emphasize autonomy and clinical decision making through direct interaction with our faculty. This method enables our fellows to gain independence in clinical judgment and procedural skills. Our program allows for fellows to achieve the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association level II training in coronary angiography, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and computed tomography coronary angiography.
The Cardiovascular Disease program includes two primary training sites, OSUMC and Saint Francis Hospital. Both sites provide fellows with a wealth of hands-on clinical training and the clinical experience is enriched because the patient populations complement each other in socioeconomic and cultural makeup. In addition, advanced heart failure rotations will be completed at INTEGRIS Baptist in OKC.
Clinical training is augmented by a robust schedule of conferences including echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cath conference, guideline conference, board review and grand rounds. Fellows are encouraged to initiate and develop plans for research projects and each fellow is required to complete a high quality research paper suitable for publication during the fellowship.
The OSUMC Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship accepts two highly qualified physicians per year and we continually strive to foster a family atmosphere where fellows can develop into excellent clinicians. Selection is based on COMLEX and USMLE board scores, the quality of training in Internal Medicine, evaluations of competence by the internal medicine program director and other references, and the personal qualities of the candidate as evaluated during the interview process.
