Psychiatry Courses

Addiction Medicine Focus Course - CLME 8841

Substance misuse, including alcohol and tobacco use, is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world, the nation, and especially Oklahoma. Physicians must be aware of the risk, incidence, prevention, and treatment modalities used for managing substance use disorders, including prescription drug misuse, illegal drugs of misuse and new and emerging drugs.

 

The Addiction Medicine Focus Course aims to enhance the student’s awareness of addiction-related risks and the outcomes associated with misuse, particularly focusing on the pharmacology and treatment of substance use disorders.

 

The course will also enhance the student’s knowledge of clinical practice for treating chronic pain, the signs and treatment of drug intoxication in the ED, and problems associated with drug use in pregnancy. This course will also serve as a timely board review for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical License Examination- Level I (COMLEX- Step One) in areas of drug misuse and treatment of substance use disorders (SUD).

Psychiatry System Course - PCME 8883

The Psychiatry System course uses a biopsychosocial, evidence-based approach to teach effective strategies for recognition, assessment, and management of psychiatric illness. The course facilitates students’ development of an appreciation of the experience of patients with psychiatric disorders and their family members.

Required Psychiatry Rotation

During this four-week experience, the student expands their knowledge of clinical psychiatry and develops psychiatric skills, under supervision of a psychiatrist serving as a preceptor. Students advance their base of knowledge in pursuit of answers to questions that arise during patient care, through assigned readings and interactions with the preceptor(s) and other faculty members. Skill development occurs as students apply knowledge from pre-clinical course work to those clinical problems encountered while performing clerkship activities.
