Orthopedic Surgery Residency Application

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to a residency training program:

1. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), who have also met the osteopathic requirements as designated by the institution:
2. 20 business days prior to the match the applicant must have ready for submission
3. 60 hours of OSU-COM’s years one and two to include; OMM I, II, III, and IV
4. Teaching Guide for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine or lectures may be used to direct the lab portion. Certificate of completion will be provided. OMM education from outside institutions will not be accepted.
5. Verification that candidate completed the CORRE examination with a minimum passing score at or above the 10th percentile.
6. Letter of recommendation from a D.O. with an active practice to be included with residency application. (letter must indicate that applicant understands osteopathic philosophy)
7. During Residency
8. Complete 60 hours of OPP Continuing Medical Education, approved by the OSU-CHS/OMECO, achieved through any of the following: CME courses, didactics, elective rotations, etc. focusing on clinical application.
9. Successfully pass an OMM basic skills competency practical examination, administered by OSU-CHS faculty, prior to PGY-2.
10. Satisfactorily progress through the Osteopathic Recognition Milestones during residency.
11. Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

Residents are selected from among eligible candidates based on residency-related criteria such as their preparedness and ability to excel in the rigors of Orthopedic education, aptitude, academic achievements, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.  The program does not discriminate in regards to gender, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or any other applicable legally protected status.

 

Audition rotations are recommended, but not required to be selected as a resident. Interview consideration is given to every applicant once we have received your personal statement, letters of recommendation, and board scores (step 1 and step 2 if applicable). Our interview dates are typically held in November and December. If you are selected to interview, you will receive an invitation to choose a date at that time. Only qualified applicants will be invited to interview. They are encouraged to come in to town the night before the interview to have dinner with the current residents. The next morning the formal interview is held, and all candidates meet with the residents and faculty one-on-one.

 

The Orthopedic Surgery Program at OSU Center for Health Sciences participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications through ERAS will be evaluated by the Interview Selection Committee on a rolling basis once the online portal opens in mid-September.

Interviews

A current National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA) transcript and/or US Medical Licensing Exam must be included as part of the application.

 

Eligible applicants will be considered for interview, ranking and appointment based on the evaluation of the Selection Committee on a rolling basis once the online portal opens in mid-September.

 

Audition Rotation

To be considered for an Ortho audition rotation, please submit your application and documentation.

 

The minimum COMLEX score to audition for Ortho is 550 and prefer 4-week rotations.

 

Please visit the Office of Clinical Education to review the following:

• Complete the visiting student application
• Upload the required documentation
• Proof of Completed Compliance Training (eg, HIPAA, ACLS/BLS, TB test, Mask fitting)
• Letter of good standing
• Current CV and photo
• Immunization verification form
• Background check report
• Certificate of malpractice liability coverage
• Proof of health insurance coverage
• 10 panel drug screen report
• HIPAA/BBP training certificates
• Letter of intent for Family Medicine
• Passing your COMLEX
• Verify that an affiliation agreement is in place with your school and OSU

Once these items have been uploaded, your file will be forwarded to the Department of General Surgery for review.  An email will be sent to the student with an approval or denial of their request.

ERAS Information

Applicants are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Completed applications are reviewed periodically and candidates are notified when there is sufficient information to offer an interview. Interview dates are granted to qualified candidates.
