Residency Training Sites and Rotations
The Department of Orthopedics at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences is committed to resident education and development to become highly qualified, independent Orthopedic surgeons. This includes developing technical skills and instilling professional attitudes in order to be a well-rounded physician. The residency includes education in the basic sciences, technical skills, and clinical knowledge.
Physicians who complete the program are expected to be proficient in managing orthopaedic care in a non-surgical and surgical fashion to include preoperative, operative and postoperative management. Residents who matriculate and graduate through the program are expected to provide exceptional patient care, respect family members and staff, and make appropriate clinical decisions. Additionally, they will advance their ability to think critically and show dedication to continued self-improvement with self-directed, lifelong learning. The Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences (OSU-CHS) is an ACGME accredited program that prepares residents to practice orthopaedic surgery through education, research, and surgical skills. Under the instruction of our skilled faculty, residents receive extensive hands-on instruction in general orthopaedics such as:
- Trauma
- Adult Reconstruction
- Sports Medicine
- Spine surgery
- Hand and Upper Extremity surgery
- Foot and Ankle surgery
- Pediatric orthopaedics
There are eleven residency programs and nine fellowship programs at the Oklahoma State University Medical Center (OSUMC), which train more than 150 residents annually. Together, OSU Center for Health Sciences and the medical center have trained more than 2,000 physicians of which many are actively practicing in Oklahoma.
The inner urban location of the hospital with proximity to rural Oklahoma offers ample opportunity to care for a wide variety of patients. The OSUMC serves as a level 3 trauma center and is home to Oklahoma’s top-ranked wound care and hyperbaric clinic. Residents also gain experience at nearby Tulsa hospitals, including:

The country's largest single site osteopathic hospital, OSU Medical Center, is located just blocks from the OSU Center for Health Sciences. What began as Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital by a group of pioneering osteopathic physicians in 1944 has grown to become one of the nation's largest osteopathic health care centers. OSU Medical Center is a flagship hospital in eastern Oklahoma. Licensed for 426 beds, with premier emergency and outpatient programs, it is poised for great outreach and growth in the 21st century. OSU Medical Center is committed to quality patient care. Because the medical center sees a wide variety of high acuity cases, the postgraduate training programs are seen as a critical priority by the medical center staff and administration.

Staff physicians have trained at some of the nation's most prestigious medical institutions and have a high regard for their personal role in postgraduate education. Internships and residency positions in many different disciplines are available. OSU Medical Center is significantly involved in clinical training for medical students, nurses, therapists and technicians from several area schools and colleges.

Saint Francis Hospital was founded by Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren, Sr. in 1955 and opened its doors in 1960. The hospital originally consisted of a six-story building with 275 acute-care beds and 40 newborn beds.
Saint Francis Hospital, a 1,112-bed tertiary center, includes the region's only children's hospital and level IV neonatal intensive care unit, a 168-bed heart hospital and Tulsa's leading trauma and emergency center.

Medical Student Clerkship
This clerkship is conducted under the supervision of the Chairperson of the Department of Surgery and the Associate Dean for Clinical Education. The Chairperson, or his/her designee, will assign the immediate supervisor(s) for each student or group of students. Student activities will be coordinated to combine didactic and practical instruction to optimize educational opportunities.
The goals for this clerkship are to: (1) introduce the osteopathic medical student to the field of surgery, (2) enable the osteopathic medical student to recognize common surgical disease processes and corresponding treatments, (3) incorporate a multidisciplinary approach to caring for a surgical patient, and (4) prepare the osteopathic student for a holistic approach to patient care, regardless of the specialty said student chooses to pursue.
The curriculum will emphasize the work-up, evaluation, and treatment and disposition of surgical patients. Students will obtain this knowledge through the completion of selected readings, online lectures, presentations, and exams. Students will incorporate this knowledge through their experiences in the clinic, hospital and operating room.
