The OSU Advantage
As one of three Athletic Training programs in the state, and one of few regionally that is aligned with a medical school, the Master’s in Athletic Training degree at OSU has several unique components that will maximize your learning experience.

Research Experience
Students in the program will create a capstone research project by completing a thesis research component, completing a Critically Appraised Topic paper, or Case Study analysis. Several of the MAT students’ projects have been presented at conferences, and/or also published in peer-review journals. Students in the MAT program also have ample opportunities to join a research team in our faculty’s area of expertise.
Full Immersive Clinical Experiences
Your clinical education will take place in a fully immersive experience. Our unique block structure of didactic coursework and clinical education model affords students the option to complete clinical experience requirements either locally
with a qualified clinical Preceptor, or travel to other locations of their choice. Our eight-week long rotations (and career-path capstone 13-week rotation) provide an uninterrupted, real-world experiences that will prepare you clinically for your chosen career path. During this experience, your main focus is on developing clinical competence and skill development in a real-world full-time setting, without the additional responsibilities of other coursework. The clinical experience ‘without boundaries’ can be completed outside the state of Oklahoma provided the clinical site and host Preceptor meet specific qualifications. Located in Tulsa, our program is rich with local clinical experiences at a number of area high schools, clinics, industrial / occupational settings, and our leading osteopathic OSU medical center. The program benefits from our strong partnership with OSU Athletics at the Stillwater campus, and its relationships with a number of universities competing in Division I athletics as well as smaller college settings, and a number of premier sports medicine clinics in the nation.
Manual Therapy Skill Development
Along with the osteopathic medicine tradition, our MAT program emphasizes both traditional and contemporary techniques in treating the musculoskeletal system. Our program includes training and certification in Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, and places a strong emphasis in manual techniques such as joint mobilization and manipulation, muscle energy techniques, positional release techniques, and various fascial mobilization methods.
Interprofessional Education
Students gain a clear advantage from learning within an academic health center and medical school. There are ample scheduled interactive learning experiences alongside students in the osteopathic medicine, and physician assistant programs. Content in radiology, and clinical skills in the assessment of illness and dysfunction in the body’s systems are prime examples.
