3 + 1 Program
The 3+1 Program allows undergraduate students to complete the academic requirements for their bachelor’s degree and their doctor of osteopathic medicine degree in seven years instead of the traditional eight years.
- How Does the 3+1 Program Work?
-
Students spend their first three years of undergraduate studies in pursuit of their bachelor’s degree at a partner university.
-
In their fourth year, students will matriculate to OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine to start their first year of medical school.
-
After successful completion of their first year of medical school, students will apply for graduation to be awarded their bachelor’s degree from their undergraduate university.
-
After year four of medical school, students in the 3+1 Program will receive their doctor of osteopathic medicine degree.
-
- Eligibility Requirements for Applicants to the 3+1 Program
-
Enroll as a full-time student at undergraduate university for no more than four (4) semesters at the time of application (excluding concurrent coursework taken during high school).
-
Courses earned as concurrent enrollment or received AP credit will be accepted.
-
Achieve a minimum 3.5 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) and a 3.5 science GPA at the time of application.
-
Science GPA will be calculated according to the course subject categories defined by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS).
-
Complete 60 or more credit hours toward a bachelor’s degree at the time of application to OSU-CHS.
-
Complete at least 500 hours participating in a health-related setting at the time of application.
-
Submit a complete application for admission through the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Services (AACOMAS) by September 1 of their junior year.
-
Students must check the appropriate box on the secondary/supplemental application to indicate they are applying through the 3+1 Program.
-
Submit a complete secondary/supplemental application by October 15 of their junior year.
-
Submit a verification form to the OSU-CHS Admissions Committee confirming that they will meet the academic requirements from OSU and OSU-CHS to earn their bachelor’s degree.
-
Participate in an interview with the OSU-CHS Admissions Committee during the fall semester of their junior year.
-
Students must meet with their Academic Advisor to review their Academic Catalog for the approved 3+1 major to ensure all the academic requirements for their undergraduate degree and the 3+1 Program are met before matriculating to OSU-CHS.
-
- What are the Benefits of the 3+1 Program?
-
Save time, save money. Students in the 3+1 Program save a year of study by completing seven instead of eight years of academic study, which translates into savings of tuition and time.
-
Students who are recipients of the Oklahoma Promise scholarship can use any remaining eligibility of 129 credit hours or five years, whichever comes first. This can be used toward their first year of medical school at $179.50 a credit hour.
-
Be considered for medical school admission among a smaller pool of applicants.
-
Receive a guaranteed interview if you meet program criteria.
-
Qualify for scholarship opportunities if you select the Rural Medical Track or Tribal Nations Medical Track.
-
- Provisional Early Acceptance into OSU-COM
Following an in-person interview, a member of the Admissions Committee and the Assistant Director of Admissions will notify applicants of the admission decision by January 1, 2025. The applicant will either be granted provisional acceptance into the 3+1 Program or be invited to apply for admission as a traditional applicant in a later application cycle. OSU-CHS is not required to admit any certain number of 3+1 Program applicants.
Students who are provisionally accepted into OSU-CHS’s 3+1 program must fulfill the following requirements to maintain their acceptance:
-
Maintain a cumulative 3.5 (GPA) and 3.5 science GPA. GPA will be calculated at the time of application and before matriculation to OSU-CHS.
-
Submit a qualifying score of at least 492 on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) by July 1 of their junior year.
-
Complete all remaining undergraduate coursework required for the approved 3+1 major by the spring semester of their junior year.
-
Submit final and official transcripts to OSU-CHS in May to demonstrate the completion of the academic requirements for the approved major and final verification by the student’s Academic Advisor at the end of the spring semester of their junior year to osucomadmissions@okstate.edu.
