Federal Work-Study

Federal work-study is a form of financial aid that allows a student to earn money for educational expenses and encourages community service work and work related to their course of study.

 

Money earned from this program is considered a financial aid award and is to provide the student with means to earn funds needed for tuition and related living expenses.

 

Federal work-study is a need-based financial aid program.


How do I apply?

To be considered for work-study, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and show sufficient financial need. Funds are awarded on a first-come first-serve basis.

What kind of positions are available?

Work-study positions may include jobs that supply services designed to improve the quality of life, especially for low-income residents of the community.

 

Students may be eligible to work summer, during breaks and limited hours during academic semesters.

    Purpose: The ambassador will support and promote the mission and goals of AIMS.
    Duties or responsibilities: 

    (Internal only) The AIMS ambassador must be a medical student in good academic standing with the OSU-COM and be in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of undergraduate medical training. Ideally, one medical student will be selected from each OSU-COM campus (Tulsa, Tahlequah). The ambassador will participate in AIMS programing focused on recruiting American Indians into medicine and science careers (e.g., Native Explorers, Native Pathways Programs). The ambassador will serve as a liaison between AIMS and other medical students enrolled at OSU-COM. The ambassador will represent AIMS during prospective student tours of the school, visiting dignitaries, and recruiting events like Operation Orange and MedX. The ambassador will work under the direction of the Associate Dean of the AIMS (Kent Smith, Ph.D.).

    • Assist students during class to learn and understand techniques being taught. Answer any questions the students may have.
    • Assist the instructor in teaching the techniques (i.e., being a patient model for the instructor)
    • Having reviews for students before practicals.
    • Assisting students learn material that was missed if they were not able to be in class. Sometimes the course director may have them tutor students who are struggling.

    Purpose: The Student Scholarship Coach will support and mentor fellow medical students in navigating the challenges and opportunities that come with financing their academic journey through scholarships. The Student Scholarship Coach will guide students from scholarship research through the application process. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities aimed at enhancing the overall scholarship application process for student peers.
    Duties or responsibilities: 
    • Counsel medical students navigating through scholarship information. This includes assisting with researching scholarships, writing essays, and using additional resources that are available outside of the Oklahoma State University system.
    • Assist with the creation of curriculum vitas and letters of recommendation to open a door to new opportunities. Includes formatting professional emails to gain the information necessary to complete applications, organize essays, and other supporting roles.
    • Create schedules to adhere to meeting times that are available to the support coach and the student.
    Rate of pay: $12.00

    Purpose: The Community Engagement and Service-Learning Assistant at OSU Center for Health Sciences (CHS) plays a pivotal role in supporting the Manager of Service-Learning. The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the operation, implementation, and promotion of the GivePulse Community engagement and Service-Learning tracking platform. This platform is a vital tool for tracking, managing, and enhancing the service-learning and other community engagement experiences of CHS students, fostering their development as engaged and compassionate professionals. The Assistant will work closely with the Manager to ensure the effective functioning of the platform, directly contributing to the success of community engagement initiatives within the CHS.
    Duties or responsibilities: 

    Platform Operation:

    • Assist in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the GivePulse platform.

    • Perform data entry and ensure accurate records of student service-learning activities.

    Training and Support:

    • Provide training sessions for students, faculty, and staff on using the GivePulse platform.

    • Offer ongoing support and troubleshooting assistance to platform users.

    Promotion and Outreach:

    • Collaborate with the Manager to develop promotional materials for the platform.

    • Assist in promoting community service opportunities to students through GivePulse.

    Data Management:

    • Compile, organize, and analyze data related to service-learning activities.

    • Generate reports on student engagement and community impact for analysis.

    Event Coordination:

    • Support the planning and execution of service-learning events.

    • Assist in logistical arrangements, participant communication, and post-event follow-up.

    Communication:

    • Serve as a point of contact for students and community partners regarding GivePulse.

    • Respond to inquiries and provide information on service opportunities and events.

    Feedback Collection:

    • Gather feedback from students and stakeholders on their experiences with the platform.

    • Use feedback to improve platform usability and enhance the service-learning experience.

    Administrative Support:

    • Assist the Manager with administrative tasks related to service-learning initiatives.

    • Maintain organized records and documentation for program evaluation purposes.
