Academic Advising
The Office of Academic Success (OAS) offers medical and graduate students, residents, and fellows individualized academic advisement to develop a success plan that includes strategies and resources specific to the needs of each learner. The OAS staff can assist students with understanding their individual learning preferences and help develop study strategies to learn most efficiently and effectively. Advising areas include:
- Time Management
- Note Taking
- Testing Resources
- Study Schedules
- Information Processing
- Test Anxiety Concentration
- Study Strategies
Medical Advisement and Professional Skills (MAPS I - IV) Courses
MAPS includes four total courses with one course being completed each semester during Year 1 and Year 2. The courses will focus on the developing the following:
- Academic Advisement: Guidance and counseling on strategies to improve student success in preclinical courses and board preparation.
- Career Advisement: Career exploration and planning, as well as application readiness for graduate medical education
- Professionalism: Development of professionalism and other related skills essential for success in the medical profession.
Academic Counselors
The Academic Counselors provide students in-depth academic counseling while helping implement new learning skills, study strategies, time management, and test preparation to help improve academic performance. The Academic Counselors assist students by:
- Providing individual academic counseling,
- Hosting exam reviews,
- Delivering presentations and workshops,
- Administering and interpreting learning study assessments,
- Referring students to appropriate resources.

Assessment
Learning, and study strategy assessments provide an opportunity to examine each medical student’s current study strategies and to design an approach to optimizing performance based on a student's preferred learning style. The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) assessment is completed by all MS1 and PA students prior to beginning classes in their first year.
