Why School Nurses and Diabetes Care?
- With the implementation of the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) program, school nurses will be empowered with the knowledge and resources to effectively manage diabetes among their student population, ultimately improving overall health outcomes in Oklahoma's youngest generation.
- As the incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes steadily rises among children and adolescents continues in the U.S., ECHO Diabetes Care for School Nurses becomes increasingly critical.
- From 2002 to 2018, research has shown a significant increase in the overall incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in this age group (CDC).
- Non-Hispanic White children and adolescents had the highest incidence of type 1 diabetes, while non-Hispanic Black children and adolescents had the highest incidence of type 2 diabetes (Wagenknecht et al., 2023).
- These alarming trends highlight the urgent need for ECHO's knowledge-sharing approach to diabetes care, providing school nurses with the necessary resources and support to effectively manage and deliver best-in-practice care to Oklahoma's youngest population.
